Arctic fiber cable proposed to link Asia and Europe. Alaska Dispatch. Network World reports that with such a cable, internet, voice, and private traffic could flow directly between Asia and Europe, doing away with the need to pass through North America. Read here.

HHS reports progress on telehealth regulations. Fierce Mobile Healthcare. HHS reported on health IT-related efforts, including a proposed rule that would allow patients to more easily access their clinical lab test results, and two that would affect telemedicine programs. Read here.

Advanced ICU Care Begins Delivering 24/7 Coverage and a Tele-ICU Solution to Critically Ill Patients at Rockford Memorial Hospital. Market Watch. Rockford Memorial is the first hospital in the Rock River Valley to partner with Advanced ICU Care in implementing such a program and to meet the latest recommendation to have intensivist physicians monitoring intensive care patients around-the-clock. MMRGlobal Announces EMR Solution at HIMSS 2012 in Booth #2062. Market Watch. Also featured in booth #2062 at HIMSS will be MMR's new Telemedicine portal, which was introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show this month in the Alcatel-Lucent ngConnect booth, as well as its prepaid Personal Health Record card for distribution through hospitals and hospital gift shops. GE to discontinue Centricity Advance EHR system. Modern Healtchare. In a statement posted to its website, GE Healthcare said it continually analyzes its software offerings and had found "that Centricity Advance and Centricity Practice Solution addressed many of the same customer needs for small- and medium-size practices." Developing Low Cost Tech. Telemedicine News. The biomedical device startup Praxis Biosciences LLC is the fifth company to move into the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) technology business incubator called TechPortal. The firm founded in 2010, has been developing low-cost technologies aimed at the medical industry. Read here.

iRobot Invests $6 Million in InTouch Health. Bradenton Herald. Under the expanded agreement, InTouch Health will provide access to FDA regulated healthcare facilities, providing iRobot with an initial foray into hospitals, emergency care facilities, patient wards and operating and procedure rooms. After comparing providers, Centra chose TeleHealth Services for offering the only enterprise platform that could be deployed across the system, while providing a three-tiered integrated solution for future expansion of the system. U.S. FEDERAL AND STATE NEWS

State Legislative Issues. Telemedicine News. The Commonwealth of Virginia spends $42.3 billion each year on their Medicaid program and this amount is expected to increase with the implementation of federal health care reform and spending requirements. Therefore, the state is looking at using telemedicine to help reduce Medicaid costs. Read here.

North Carolina's HIT Initiatives. Telemedicine News. The state is involved in a number of HIT initiatives such as their Health Information Exchange where the state received $12.9 million in a Federal grant plus $1.7 million from a supplemental Challenge Grant to enable the secure exchange of patient health information between providers and hospitals statewide. Trading & Partnering with Mexico. Telemedicine News. To increase the trading relationship between the U.S and Mexico especially in health technology, a delegation of U.S. healthcare technology firms are going to Mexico on May 14th and 15th, 2012. Read here.

Sen. Udall drafting bill to kill telemedicine barriers. Government Health IT. Sen. Tom Udall (D-Utah) anticipates introducing a bill this spring to make it easier for physicians to practice telemedicine in many states instead of applying for a separate license for each state. Read here.

Federal Telemedicine News: CMS Awards $500 Million. TelemedicineNews.com. CMS through the CMS Medicare Medicaid Innovation Center has made $500 million available for the new “Partnership for Patients” (PFP) program.The goal is to reduce harm in hospital settings by 40 percent and reduce hospital readmissions by 20 percent over a three year period.
